Sports Performance Enhancement with Hydrogen Water

Deuterium Depleted Water

“The effect of deuterium depleted drinking water on the performance of sportsmen”

Hungarian Review of Sports Medicine (2005: 46/1:27-38.) The authors saw an optimization in a host of parameters during the study period of 44 days. Twelve international-level male rowers participated in the study – 7 athletes consumed 2 L of 105 mg/L DDW water for 44 days and 5 athletes drank ordinary tap water. Both groups underwent a multistage load test at the start and end of the study. Pulse-rate was continuously monitored. Acid-base parameters (pH, pCO2, pO2, HCO3, base excess), ions (Na+, K+, Cl–), blood lactate and blood glucose, as well as the anion gap were determined from capillary blood samples. The results of drinking deuterium-depleted water with 105 mg/L deuterium concentration: Improved tissue oxygenation Less pronounced tissue anoxia Better mobilisation of glycose Better utilisation of glucose; and The cells showed a better metabolic compensation of the load-dependent changes in deuterium-depleted state achieved by consumption of 105 mg/L DDW.

“Deuterium-Depleted Water as Adjuvant Therapeutic Agent for Treatment of Diet-Induced Obesity in Rats”

Tetiana Halenova et al. This study shows a potential application of deuterium-depleted water (DDW) for the prevention and adjuvant treatment of obesity in rats. We tested the hypothesis that DDW can alleviate diet-induced obesity (DIO) and its associated metabolic impairments. Rats fed a high-fat diet had an increased body weight index (BWI), glucose concentration, and level of certain proinflammatory cytokines; decreased levels of insulin in the serum; decreased tryptophan and serotonin in the brain, and a decreased concentration of some heavy metals in the liver. Drinking DDW at a concentration of 10 mg/L deuterium/protium (D/H) ad libitum for 3 weeks restored the BWI, glucose (serum), tryptophan (brain), and serotonin (brain) levels and concentration of Zn in the liver in the DIO animals to those of the controls. The levels of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IFNγ) and anti-inflammatory TNFα were decreased in DIO rats, while anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-4, IL-10) levels remained at the control levels, which is indicative of a pathophysiological syndrome. In contrast, in groups of rats treated with DDW, a significant increase in anti-inflammatory (IL-4, IL-10) and proinflammatory cytokines (IFNγ) was observed. This finding indicates a reduction in systemic inflammation in obese animals treated with DDW. Similarly, the high-fat diet caused an increased level of oxidative stress products, which was accompanied by decreased activity of both superoxide dismutase and catalase, whereas the administration of DDW decreased the level of oxidative stress and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities.

"Molecular hydrogen improves obesity and diabetes…and stimulating energy metabolism in mice"

Naomi Kamimura et al. Recent extensive studies have revealed that molecular hydrogen H2 has great potential for improving oxidative stress-related diseases by inhaling H2 gas, injecting saline with dissolved H2, or drinking hydrogen rich water; however, little is known about the dynamic movement of H2 in a body. First, we show that liver glycogen accumulates H2 after oral administration of Hydrogen-rich water, explaining why consumption of even a small amount of hydrogen over a short span time efficiently improves various disease models. The benefits of drinking hydrogen water ad libitum, on type 2 diabetes was investigated, using db/db obesity mice. Drinking Hydrogen water reduced oxidative stress in the liver, and significantly alleviated fatty liver in db/db mice as well as high fat-diet-induced fatty liver in wild-type mice. Long-term drinking of hydrogen rich water significantly controlled fat and body weights… Drinking Hydrogen water also decreased levels of plasma glucose, insulin, and triglyceride, the effect of which on hyperglycemia was similar to diet restriction!!!. To examine how drinking Hydrogen rich water improves obesity and metabolic parameters at the molecular level, gene-expression profiles were examined. The findings were that, indeed, hydrogen (H2) stimulated energy metabolism as measured by oxygen consumption. The present results suggest the potential benefit of Hydrogen (H2) in improving obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

“Submolecular regulation of cell transformation by deuterium depleting water exchange reactions in the tricarboxylic acid substrate cycle”

László Boros et al. Deuterium depleted light water is able to protect DNA from radiation damage and the authors here establish a ling between mitochondrial deuterium load and dietary factors and cellular deuterium detoxification mechanisms… “The naturally occurring isotope of hydrogen (1H), deuterium (2H), could have an important biological role. Deuterium depleted water delays tumor progression in mice, dogs, cats and humans. Hydratase enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle control cell growth and deplete deuterium from redox cofactors, fatty acids and DNA, which undergo hydride ion and hydrogen atom transfer reactions. A model is proposed that emphasizes the terminal complex of mitochondrial electron transport chain reducing molecular oxygen to deuterium depleted water (DDW); this affects gluconeogenesis as well as fatty acid oxidation. In the former, the DDW is thought to diminish the deuteration of sugar-phosphates in the DNA backbone, helping to preserve stability of hydrogen bond networks, possibly protecting against aneuploidy and resisting strand breaks, occurring upon exposure to radiation and certain anticancer chemotherapeutics. DDW is proposed here to link cancer prevention and treatment using natural ketogenic diets, low deuterium drinking water…”

Krempels K. et al. Study comparing the survival of breast cancer in groups of conventional therapy compared to a group drinking Deuterium Depleted Water in addition to conventional cancer therapy. There is increasing evidence that the heavy isotope of hydrogen, deuterium (D), has a pivotal role in cell signalling and that deuterium depletion through the replacement of normal drinking water with deuterium-depleted water (DDW) results in tumour necrosis. The impact of Deuterium depletion on breast cancer outcome was studied retrospectively. The normal daily water intake (150 mg/L Deuterium) of 232 breast cancer patients was replaced with DDW (65-105 mg/L Deuterium) for at least 91 days, without altering conventional treatment regimens. According to staging at initial diagnosis, patients with early stage breast cancer achieved a median survival time (MST) of 18.1 years, compared with 4.3 years in patients with advanced disease. The MST is pending in the subgroup of patients who were in remission at the start of DDW treatmen

”Biological Significance of Naturally Occurring Deuterium: The Antitumor Effect of Deuterium Depletion”

Gábor Somlyai et al. Deuterium depleted water (25 mg/L) induced complete or partial tumor regression in dogs and cats with spontaneous malignancies, it was registered as anticancer for veterinary use in 1999 (Vetera-DDW-25 A.U.V., 13/99 FVM). The hypodermic preparation of the registered veterinary drug was successfully tested in clinical investigations. A randomized, double blind controlled, human Phase II clinical trial with prostate cancer (Under the Hungarian Institute of Pharmacology No. 5621/40/95) was performed, which exhibited a significant difference between the control and treated groups with respect to the examined parameters, median survival time and the extension of life-span. The study suggests that cells are able to regulate the D/H ratio and the changes in the D/H ratio can trigger certain molecular mechanisms having a key role in cell cycle regulation. The study further supposes that not the shift in the intracellular pH, but the concomitant increase in the D/H ratio is the real trigger for the cells to enter into S phase. The decrease of Deuterium concentration can intervene in the signal transduction pathways thus leading to tumor regression.

Deuterium Depleted Water

“Deuterium-depleted water has stimulating effects on long-term memory in rats”

Cristian Mladin et al. Deuterium-depleted water (DDW) is a water which has a 6-7-fold less concentration of the naturally occurring deuterium (20-25mg/L vs. 150mg/L). While administrated for a longer period, it may reduce the concentration of deuterium throughout the body, thus activating cellular mechanisms which are depending on protons (channels, pumps, enzyme proteins). The aim of the present work was to study, for the first time in our knowledge, the possible influence of deuterium-depleted water (DDW) chronic administration in normal Wistar rats, as compared to a control group which received distilled water, on spatial working memory and the locomotor activity (as studied through Y-maze) or both short-term and long-term spatial memory (assed in radial 8 arms-maze task). …we could speculate that the administration of DDW may generate an improvement of the reference memory, as an index of long-term memory. Thus, we can reach the conclusion that the change between the deuterium/hydrogen balance may have important consequences for the mechanisms that govern long-term memory, as showed here especially in the behavioral parameters from the eight-arm radial maze task.
